Have you ever felt like you have so much to do and yet there is so little time to do it? Have you ever faced an overwhelming workload without you knowing where and when to start?
Most of the time, leaders become fazed with the enormity of their tasks and duties at work. What do I do first? How do I determine which is urgent and which is important? These are some of the questions you may be asking yourself.
On top of all the issues at work, you also have to think of family and other social obligations. You find your schedule jampacked, and you don't know where to begin.
What can you do in situations like this? Do you just give up and not solve the problem, or can you find an effective way to manage your time?
I'm sure you, like most leaders, have gone through some time management courses. So, if you can recall, what is the first lesson in time management?
Prioritization is key. This concept may be cliché, but it's true. Millions of people struggle with time management and setting priorities. Search online, and you will find several resources about time management. But still, the issue is not resolved.
Why is prioritization challenging to do? It's because the human mind is set to pay attention to what's new, novel, and immediate.
The success of time management hinges on your ability to prioritize everyday responsibilities. Rather than reacting to what is new and urgent, a leader should concentrate first on what is important in the long term.
What can you do to spend less time reacting to what's new and more time pursuing your long-term objectives? The first step is to get clarity on your values and purpose. By doing this, you can de-prioritize what is not aligned with your long-term goal. Say no to minor tasks so you can devote your attention to the more important ones.
Another would be the concept of "rewiring your brain." Changing your perspective on priorities allows you to work more strategically and control your destiny.
Unfortunately, no time management course covers the rewiring of one's brain to help leaders get back on track in their schedules. But I have good news for you. I'm working on a new training program with a brain-training component to assist leaders like you be more aware of your daily time management duties. It's a transformational course that you can do on your time but still provide you with a community of support and accountability.
