Fear positivity!

Is it wrong to be too optimistic?


Would you believe me if I said that too much positivity could be an obstacle to your long-term success? You will probably just laugh in my face.

All our lives, we are told to surround ourselves with positive people. We learned through all these years how critical positive thinking is. So, you might ask, why do I say fear positivity?

Well, false positivity, that is.

Some people call it toxic positivity. That's because it does more harm than good.

False Positivity

You tell your team member that she did well in a presentation. But in reality, she did terribly. She was unprepared, and it showed! It was a hot mess.

But you choose not to give her negative feedback. What do you think will happen?

It will be the same thing when she gets to make another presentation. She would have no idea that she desperately need improvement and it isn’t good for her.

You, me, and all others need constructive criticism to be able to become the best version of ourselves.


Dismissing negative feelings, avoiding negative feedback, and false assurances are examples of toxic positivity.
